Kasaya, free translation is bad color clothes, not correct color, dyed clothes, dyed clothes, polluted clothes; there are many other names: clothes of blessed fields, clothes like fields, dung sweeping clothes, cutting clothes, miscellaneous clothes. It is the clothing of Buddhist monks. The most notable features are "bare right shoulder", "cut off to look like a field", and "not dyed properly". Shakyamuni Buddha once said that all the Buddhas of the three generations wore the same Kasaya to show that they had become Buddhas.
Bare right shoulder is the aesthetics of Indian clothing, leaving the right arm free for productive labor, which is also somewhat reflected in the traditions of other ethnic groups, such as the clothes of the ancient Romans and Tibetans also have similar style characteristics. Therefore, in the tradition of Samanas in ancient India, monks of various religions have similar clothes, simply wrapping the clothes around their bodies and exposing their right arms; Buddhism is no exception. Before Shakyamuni Buddha became enlightened and when he first became a monk, he learned Zen from monks of other religions, so his clothes also inherited the style of monks from ancient India.
The early Buddhist monks studied Buddhism very hard. They did not produce or save money. In order to solve the problem of the source of monks' clothes, they allowed monks to find discarded clothes in barren mounds. In short, they pulled out clothes from corpses and cleaned them. , stitched and dyed ready to wear. In this way, monks can also get rid of the fear of death and embody the principle of impermanence. This is called "dung sweeping clothes" and "(hundred) clothes".
At that time, believers who practiced religion at home in ancient India generally wore white clothes. In order to show the difference, the clothes of Buddhist monks stipulate that the dyeing cannot be "right color", such as pure white, pure black, pure red (red) and so on are called "right color", and the cassock must be "non-right color", which can also get rid of greed for gorgeous clothes. want. This is the origin of the names "bad color clothes", "uncorrect color", "dyed clothes", "dyed clothes" and "polluted clothes".
After Shakyamuni Buddha's sangha grew in size, the Buddha also allowed monks to accept new cloth offerings from believers, but the whole cloth had to be cut into pieces and then stitched. This is because destroying the clothes first can break the monk's attachment to clothes. This is the origin of the names of "cutting clothing" and "miscellaneous clothing".
According to "Dharmagupta-vinaya" : The Buddha once saw the paddy fields in blocks, and the Buddha asked Venerable Ananda to teach the monks to cut the Kasaya into the paddy fields beside the fields. shape to sew. In this way, planting food in the fields to support life is like a Kasaya that can nourish wisdom and life. At the same time, it shows that Buddhism, Dharma, and monks are the fields of blessings in the world. When all living beings see the Kasaya , they know that they are monks. This is the origin of the titles "clothes of blessed fields" and "clothes like fields".
